“Normal Folk”

What if stereotypes had never came to exist
If u fit the profile, would u obey or resist?
Would u subconsciously comply with a prejudiced mold
‘Cause u’re really that way, or ‘cause of something u’re told?
And when people grow old, do they gain more insight
Or cling to the ways of their earlier days?
Is it any coincidence that strange rhymes with change?

Normal folk who rear their children on religious fables
Normal folk who tell their children, “elbows off the tables”
Normal folk who never question the stigmas of tradition
Normal folk who gaze at my ways with contempt + suspicion

refrain:
But see, everything that I can conceive
Seems perfectly normal to me
Everything I say I’ve done thought thru
Which is more than I can say for some of u…

Normal folk who tell their children, “don’t be like your friends”
Normal folk who hope their childrens end up “normal” as them
Normal folk who’s only knowledge came right out of school
Then, just ‘cause a brotha sidestepped college, take me for a fool?
refrain

When the folk stare
And they damn glare
At my damn hair
And what I damn wear
Like they damn care
And they just glare
Like I let the air
Out they damn spare
When I call ‘em square
They say I’m unfair?
I won’t look back, no, and when u turn to a pillar of salt
Remember
It’cho
Own
Damn
Fault.
